The last moments of breath before the ventilator breathes for him are precious<\/p>\n

This could be the last goodbye, the last facetime, the last I love you<\/p>\n

Right before he wants to call his family<\/p>\n

It could be the last time he speaks with them<\/p>\n

He hangs up and looks at us anxiously<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to die\u201d he says<\/p>\n

We tell him we are here for him and we will take care of him<\/p>\n

The ET tube is supposed to help him breathe easier<\/p>\n

To let his muscles and lungs take a break<\/p>\n

We hope and pray this works<\/p>\n

In our minds we know this could be the last time he interacts with people<\/p>\n

We try to ease his fear but there are no words to provide comfort<\/p>\n

We tell him his family loves him<\/p>\n

The breath we used to take for granted has been taken away for so many<\/p>\n

Each breath is precious<\/p>\n
