The division of general internal medicine is the largest division in the department of medicine, with fifteen attending level physicians and one ambulatory chief resident. The group supervises the house staff in the ambulatory practice and also provides direct care for their own patients, accounting for about 60,000 visits annually in total. Each house staff member is part of a Patient Centered Medical Home team, with a primary attending leader and 2-3 other secondary supervising attendings. House staff provide care for patients in continuity over the 3-year residency and have the responsibility to provide comprehensive primary care.

The ambulatory faculty group is also involved with many other important functions within the medical center including in-patient attending, in-patient medical consult attending, performance improvement, supervision in the diabetes practice, pre-operative medical consultation, and the medicine-psychiatry clinic. The directors of the Palliative Care Service, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and the Ethics Committee are members of the division of general medicine, as is the employee health physician.

The group participates enthusiastically in Einstein Medical School and Jacobi-Einstein residency activities such as in-patient attending, 3rd year clerkship and 4th year clerkship/sub-internship curriculum development and teaching, ambulatory block curriculum development and teaching, and oversight of the MD/PhD Clinic. There is a wide range of expertise and interest among the faculty covering areas such as women’s health and gender studies, mental health disorders in primary care, chronic disease management and care of the patient at home.
