EC question 6

Question #6

Emergency contraceptive medications are not yet available
over-the-counter.  However, after two
decades of promotion in the United States and many more decades in Europe and
Asia, these methods have been proven to be very safe.  Of course, the cost of preventing unplanned pregnancies and
avoiding surgical abortions adds significantly to the value of making these
methods widely available without prescription.
Because this is not yet possible in the United States, physicians should
consider giving sexually active females a supply of emergency contraceptives in
the event their primary form of contraception fails.
