CASE FOUR
It’s January 3rd. A 62 year-old woman with hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, and obesity has made a New Year’s resolution to use the treadmill her children gave her for Christmas to embark on an exercise program. The treadmill’s instruction booklet warns her to check with her doctor before beginning Aif you have any of the following – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. Her husband died of a myocardial infarction suffered while shoveling snow. She has no known coronary disease. The most exercise she’s gotten in the last few months is walking up the twelve stairs from her basement, which leaves her winded.
Is it safe for her to use the treadmill?
What can you tell her about the relation between exercise and MI?
